How to Allow the Creative Power of Imagination to Emerge

The power of imagination created the illusion that my vision went much farther than the naked eye could actually see. – Nelson Mandela

Our imagination is such a powerful force, whose source is very deep within. It moves through us in mysterious ways, inspiring the creative process, which is inherently unknown. In fact, as we surrender to this force, we really do not know what is going to be born through us. We just allow images to emerge into our consciousness. For this to happen we need to be in alignment with the deepest source within 🙂

Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it. — Michelangelo

Unfortunately, since we are part of a society that values much more logical and rational thinking, at a very young age we often disconnect from our imagination. As a consequence we live our life completely cut off from the most deep and vital part of our being. We forget who we really are and what we really want…

I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world. — Albert Einstein

Why is it so important to reconnect with our imagination?

The human mind is a very powerful instrument, as it can be used to visualize a certain reality and manifest it.

Proper visualization by the exercise of concentration and willpower enables us to materialize thoughts, not only as dreams or visions in the mental realm but also as experiences in the material realm. — Paramahansa Yogananda

In other words, everything we think becomes our reality.

Be careful of your thoughts, for your thoughts become your words.
Be careful of your words, for your words become your actions.
Be careful of your actions, for your actions become your habits.
Be careful of your habits, for your habits become your character.
Be careful of your character, for your character becomes your destiny. — Chinese proverb

What happens when, having lost access to our imagination, we create our reality only from the more superficial conceptual thinking?

We end up using visualization to manifest what we think we want. Unfortunately, this process is ego driven. You might believe that this is exactly what you are looking for. Into the Magic Shop, A Neurosurgeon’s Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart, written by James Doty, is a great book that explains exactly why wanting to manifest your dreams will inevitably make you feel miserable. He describes how he used visualization techniques to live the life he thought he wanted, becoming extremely rich and successful. Unfortunately, instead of feeling satisfied and joyful, he became more and more miserable. He finally understood what was missing. Visualization itself was not sufficient, he needed to be connected to his heart. The moment he realized it, his life changed completely 🙂

The issue is not that you are to figure out what you want to make happen and then “manifest your dreams”. It would be more like God Himself is dreaming through us. When we are in correct spiritual alignment, we are conduits through which God’s thoughts are extended out into the world and the effects that emanates from that are co-creation of God and man. — Marianne Williamson

Instead of deciding what you want and being obsessed with it, find a way to reconnect with your imagination and ask for guidance 🙂 For example, if you do not know what to do in a particular situation or where to go, do not overanalyze the situation and practice sitting quietly and allowing images to come to you. Do not judge them, just observe. This is a much deeper and effective way to use the creative power of your mind 🙂

You might be wondering now How can we invite our imagination back into our lives, if we are disconnected from it?

A very simple idea is to allow your creativity to emerge, by dedicating daily some time to inspiring activities like drawing, writing or even gardening. Pick any activity that works for you 🙂

To deepen the connection with your imagination and allow guidance to come to you, Deepak Chopra, a very well-known author, suggests to practice regularly the following meditation.

Sit still and relax your body for few moments. To settle in you can use one of the meditations suggested in How To Get Started with Mindfulness Meditation: Some Ideas to Help You Establish Your Own Practice. Then ask yourself slowly the questions
    Who am I?
    What do I really want?
    What is my purpose?
    What am I grateful for?
Do not think about an answer, just be present and repeat the questions slowly few times and allow images to come and go. Detach from the outcome and be open to receive guidance in the form of events, thoughts or synchronicity. When you are ready, open your eyes.

Always remember that images are very powerful.  By allowing them to rise into consciousness, unknown energies can be activated inside of you  🙂

When you observe yourself within you see a world of images, generally known as fantasies. […] Everything is fantasy to begin with. Fantasy is not a tangible object, but it is a fact nevertheless. When you observe the stream of images within, you observe an aspect of the world, of the world within. — C.G. Jung

  1. Wonderful post! Our day to day is so tense, we are always controlling and being controlled by others, I like to use the art journal and write to give freedom to my imagination, a kind of balance.
