How Can We Heal the World?

Do what is healing to your spirit and without effort you will bring the world healing in return. — Alan Cohen

As we are going through a major shift in our cultures, it may seem like if fear and hate are spreading rapidly all around us. At least this the impression that we get when we read or watch the news. But fortunately this is only half of the picture 🙂 In fact, in response to this feared based ideology, many people are awakening 🙂 Since it is not anymore possible to look the other way, pretending it is not their problem, many among us are becoming more and more aware. Unfortunately very often they do not get the attention of the media, which are almost exclusively focused on selling fear. But the awakening is happening and it is increasingly growing as well 🙂
Are you also wondering how you can contribute to bring more light into the world in these times of extreme need? 🙂

We need love in our hearts so we don’t perpetuate a cycle of anger and hate, but we need fierceness so that we don’t let things continue on their current harmful path. — Kristin Neff

Before taking any action, the first and most important thing to do is to stop spreading fear and hate. In fact, as we discussed in Energy: Where Does It Come From?, we are constantly be influenced by the energy of our surroundings, so it is extremely easy to get lost in reactivity and contribute to the fear-based ideology. This is why, especially during these challenging times, it is very important to cultivate a practice that allows us to remain present. This is the only way change can happen, first inside ourselves, and then spread out into the world.

In the name of the daybreak
And the eyelids of morning
and the wayfaring moon
and the night when it departs,
I swear I will not dishonor
my soul with hatred,
but offer myself humbly
as a guardian of nature,
as a healer of misery,
as a messenger of wonder,
as an architect of peace. — Diane Ackerman

Then, when we start taking conscious and inspired actions, at times we might feel very frustrated. In fact, very often we put all our efforts into something we believe in, but do not see any result. We might feel so discouraged that we start questioning ourselves and pondering whether we should be quitting. During this challenging moments, what can we do to sustain our inner sparkles of light and prevent them from extinguishing?

First of all, it is important to let go of the need for a special outcome. Sometimes the ripples created by our actions spread in ways that we cannot even imagine. Our job is to plant seeds of connections and trust that they will bloom, even if we do not see or understand how.

Do not depend on the hope of results. You may have to face the fact that your work will be apparently worthless and even achieve no result at all, if not perhaps results opposite to what you expect. As you get used to this idea, you start more and more to concentrate not on the results, but on the value, the rightness, the truth of the work itself. You gradually struggle less and less for an idea and more and more for specific people. In the end, it is the reality of personal relationship that saves everything. ― Thomas Merton

Another risk might be feeling so alone and powerless that we end up giving up our light and succumb to fear. This has a lot to do with our surroundings and the type of information we feed ourselves with. To avoid getting lost, it is vital to look for a community of like-minded people who can support us. In The Power of Community this topic is discussed in more detail 🙂

If there is light in the soul,
There will be beauty in the person. If there is beauty in the person,
There will be harmony in the house. If there is harmony in the house,
There will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation,
There will be peace in the world.  – Chinese proverb
